Warung Lab

2024

Warung Space introduces a concept that carries the meaning of being self-organized, modest and homey. The Designing with the Planet team with members from Labtek Apung (Jakarta), Salve Saracura and Atlas do Chão (São Paulo), Floating University (Berlin) and the urban lab Planetary Tactics for Cohabitation (Jamie Baxter, Laura Kemmer) built a warung at Spore Gallery as a culmination of two years collaboration. The temporary space became a spot for sharing the tactics for riparian struggles around urban waters and rivers in Jakarta, Berlin, and São Paulo to the visitors.

During the day, the Warung offered varieties of tactics, introducing multidisciplinary approaches in delving deeper and voicing water issues through DIY chemical testing, Counter-mapping site, the audiovisual installation, films, photographs, performance, letter writing, embroidery workshop, and creative activism tactics.

The Warung concept also grounded the practice of scientific inquiry in detecting environmental change to an informal and embodied practice. We offered ways of DIY testing of water quality through through sensing by taking samples from several water sources.

Exchange is a crucial part of this collaboration, including to the broader public. The notion of sample, 'economic-size' that characterizes the common goods sold in warung, fits how the this collaboration have been operating: by circulating fractions of riparian zones inJakarta, Berlin, and São Paulo. Water samples, photographs, leaves, masks, circulate not just within those cities, but also to those who wish to learn about them.
